Question
Test results revealed tiny nodes on the right and left thyroid 3.6mm and 4mm.  Left lymph node measures 1.2cmx1.1cm with cluster of jugulodigastric lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are not size for pathologically enlarged and may be reactive.  Doc wants to remove the large lymph node to look at cell structure.  This will require a large incision.  Is this necessary?

Answer
Dear Dolores,   YES, it is necessary for this lymph node to be removed and biopsied....  You doctor is wanting to determine the cell structure probably to rule out any type of cancer....

As for the incision, this is a question you will have to ask him because it will depend on what he feels will be necessary inorder to get the entire lymph node...

thank you,   karen

I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience

My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..
