About Karen Brawner Expertise I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...
Experience My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..
Question Hi, my problems started about 2 years ago, when by accident, the md found that my thyroid was enlarged. It happened to be complex nodules( cold) so the surgeon decided to remove that(half of the gland) and she put me on synthroid 0.15 to prevent the small nodules on the other side from acting up. ok, fine. But 18 months later, i am experiencing all the symptoms of hypothyroidism but the doctor said my results are ok.( tsh is always below normal). Now, my rheumatoid factor test is positive; no arthritis present, upper back pain, arm pain, headaches.... So the rheumatologist put me on anti-depressant, sleeping pills and anti-inflamatory , which I take not of. I don't really know what to think anymore! All I know is that I am not the person I was before the thyroid surgery!! Any answers for me?
Thanks,
France
Answer Dear France, If your thyroid problems are not being controlled by an endocrinologist or a thyroidologist, and simply just a family doctor, gp or ob/gyn, then I suggest that you get a referral to and endocrinologist or thyroidologist and get more blood work that just a TSH... You could have thyroid anti-bodies showing in the blood work and since that blood work is not being done, you would never know.... There are 8-10 different types of thyroid blood work that must be done and looked at together as a package inorder to make a PROPER diagnosis and to get proper treatment....
As for the rheumatologist, this sounds like an idiot since anti-depressants and sleeping pills are being used to cover up your MEDICAL problem that has not yet been properly diagnosed....
