About Karen Brawner
Expertise
I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience
My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..

Question
hi karen,  I am 48 yrs old and have a long standing underactive thyroid. I take 200mg thyroxine a day. Recently i have noticed a tiredness, hair loss, headache, and sometimes a strange trembling inside, which i am assuming has to do with my thyroid. My doctor seems to work solely on blood test results, but sometimes i feel they dont give the full picture. Any tips?  marie

Answer
Dear Marie,   My first tip would be NOT to go to a GP, Family doctor, or an Internal Medicine doctor...  You need to be under the supervision of an Endocrinologist... This type of doctor specialisizes in endocrine glands like the thyroid and will listen to the patient and their symptoms and pay less attention to blood work results...  Everyone knows that thyroid blood work is NOT always correct... Many doctors try to put it in context that what the lab says is "within normal limits" works for everyone...  WRONG!  That is like saying "one size fits all"....

Find another doctor who will listen to YOU and YOUR SYMPTOMS and not just blood test results....  Until you do this, your problem will not get any better...

Thank you,    karen
