About Karen Brawner
Expertise
I will answer any questions you have regarding the thyroid whether it be cancer, cysts (types), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, blood tests for thyroid problems, surgery, fine needle biopsies etc...

Experience
My complex cysts on my right thyroid gland and the isthmus were found my accident when my doctor thought I was having a TIA. The ultrasound found a complex cysts the size of a golf ball (which turned out to be the size of a tennis ball when it was surgically remove). Doctors were totally surprised because for 5 years, including the day I went to surgery, all of my thyroid blood work was "within the normal range". So much for blood work being conclusive..

Question
i have just had blood tests as my docter suspects i have a under active thyroid. My main symtoms are weight gain. loss of hair. low energy levels.  my sister and aunty also have this condition.  If i do have this condition and my docter prescribes medication will my hair grow thicker quite soon or will it take aq while

Answer
Dear Sam,    I doubt if your hair will grow thicker at all and infact even with medication, you may still have some hair loss...  However, once the doctor can get your thyroid medication leveled off, then the hair loss should stop.. As for growing in thicker, that probably will never happen, but stopping it will help....

You must take your medication on time every day, go in monthly for blood work to check your TOTAL THYROID blood panel and get a doctor (Endocrinologist) who is a specialist in endocrine gland hormone function...  GP's and family doctors just do not know enough about what to look for with people who have a thyroid problem...  Blood tests are often NOT correct....  Example, the TSH can show NORMAL, but the symptoms of hair loss and weight gain are still there, indicating that the medicine is not right or the wrong quantity.....

Thank you,    karen
