Time-Shares - Misrepresentation

Question
I purchased a time share at the Westin in Scottsdale, AZ about 18 months ago.  At that time, Starwood published the points required for stays at all of their resorts throughout the system.  That also told me my "buying power" for the price I was paying.  I tried to reserve a week in Cancun at one of the resorts listed and the agent told me that they had changed the number of points required because the remodel to the resort ended up being nicer than expected.  He said that the previously published number of point required for a stay was just an estimate.  I've looked all through the paperwork I received and it doesn't say anywhere that any of the points required for a stay was an estimate or that they are allowed to change them.  I want to use my ownership in Cancun but at the previously published rate.  Thoughts on this situation are welcome.

Answer
Unusual for the Westin.  But it is becoming more common among the points based systems.  It is obviously deceit - these companies usually have upgrade departments that will sell you additional points - this is one way to increase sales for them - by devaluing your points.

Usually they can change point values if they change seasonality.  But they cannot devalue your points.  I would call Westin and fight the issue.  Check your paperwork carefully again - and if they don't relent ask for a cancellation of the contract and a full refund.

Let me know how this goes - I have other suggestions, but they wouldn't be appropriate at this time.  By the way, you may want to do a search on Worldmark, they are having the same issue and are being sued as we speak - the outcome of that case could make all the difference.
