Time-Shares - Getting rid of a timeshare

Question
QUESTION: I purchased a time share about 3 years ago. I still owe a good chunk on it. Since then I have had 2 kids and we are having financial problems.  Is there a way to get out of it? I am even willing to eat what I put into it just to have no more payments.  I tried to sell it but the company I used just took my $300 and did nothing so I'm leary to try again.  Thanks.

ANSWER: NEVER pay an up front fee to sell your timeshare.  There are legitimate resale brokers who will charge you after they have sold it for you.  The longest period of time Timeshare Village took to sell a timeshare was 30 days.  But, having said that, we price it accordingly (which may shock you).  I can tell you this... if you happen to own the very best timeshare on the market, you are probably lucky to get 50 percent of what you paid - a more reasonable figure is something like 10 - 30 percent.

Good luck!

QUESTION: How do I go about finding a comapany that dosen't charge up front fees?  I googled timeshare sales and everything that came up charges up front.  Timeshare Village only sells Monarch Vacations.
ANSWER: Actually, we do sell other timeshares as well.  My concern is can we sell your timeshare and still pay off the loan amount?  Let me know what it is you own exactly and I'll see if I can't find resale prices.

QUESTION: Thanks.  I owe about $9700.  If it can't be sold is there any other way to get out of it?  We're having a really hard time making the payments.

Answer
I don't know what you own, so I couldn't say if it could be sold for $9,700.  As for getting out of it... you can simply not pay, but there will be consequences - as if you purchased a car, signed a loan agreement and then decided to stop making payments.  There will be attempts to collect, credit reporting, etc.

Perhaps you should consult with a Bankruptcy attorney?  I'm not sure what the solution is - that wouldn't have consequences.
