Hi Ray, I am looking for a reliable used awd or 4x4 vehicle for my daughter (19) who is in college in VT, yet we live in PA, so it needs to have good fuel economy (does that eliminate the 4x4 class?)...and safety is huge, so I want it to have front and side air bags, etc.  She is a skier, so a sedan is out.  It needs to easily handle cargo and effectively negotiate snowy VT roads!  We are thinking about subarus or the toyota rav4...any other suggestions?

Your choice of SUV'S are good, with the exception of side air bags my choice is an Escape, excellent in snow and good on gas, but hey if you ask 10 people you will get their choice and that may not be your daughters.
