Tips on Buying Cars - My father is not US citizen. Can he buy me a car in US?

Question
Hi Ray,

I am really impressed by your website. I only have one suggestion. When it comes to credit score the most relevant score to lenders is FICO score. Most of sites provide you with their generic scores which are made to look similar to FICO but they are not. So the most relevant site to go to is myfico.com. I also wanted to ask you a question. Can my father who is not citizen of USA (he lives in Europe) buy me a car in US and have a title transferred to his name where I would register and insure the car in my name (I am US permanent resident for almost 7 years).  We called NY DMV and they asked him for same documents (6 points worth of ID) which are required in order to get NY driving license which he as foreigner does not have. I heard that in Las Vegas it would be easier. The reason I would do this is to avoid potential ownership dispute with my wife during divorce which is pending. Thanks.

Regards,
Nikola

Answer
Hi, Nikola

I would have answered your Q last night, and it's not very often I can't right away, but yours made me ponder.

Long story short, there is no way your dad will have title the way I see it, NY or Vegas, you must have residence status in US.

As for your pending divorce, have you not got a friend that you can trust 100% that lives in or around you that will carry title till matters are at hand.

As for FICO,,, thanks,,, I will check it out.
