Tips on Buying Cars - Problems with dealership

Expert: Jeremy Beck - 7/4/2009

Question
Hi, I purchased a used car (08 Volvo xc70) from a local dealership a week ago.  I having been trying to wire the money to their account but it keeps getting returned so I have not actually paid for the car yet, they have my trade in.  In the last week I have not been able to get the carfax report I was promised and still have not received my signed paperwork.  I finally ordered the carfax report myself because the car is making a terrible creaking noise when I turn.  Through the carfax report I found there is a recall on the engine cooling fan, I was not told about this.  I have told them about the creaking noise but they just say they have never heard it.  The people at the dealership are very abusive, I leave in tears every time.  I am wondering if there is anyway to get out of this deal and go somewhere else?

Answer
Christine,

Thanks for your question.  Well, I can tell you that since you haven't paid for the car, then techincally you don't own it.  If I were you, I would call the dealership and speak to either the Sales Manager or the General Manager, and explain the situtaion to them.  Tell them that you want the car fixed, and that you were promised a carfax and it was never given to you.

Understand that a recall is very normal and nothing out of pocket for you.  All you have to do is take it to a Volvo dealership and they will take care of the recall without cost to you.  But if you are unhappy with the dealership then simply return the car, since you have not paid for it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - JB
