Tips on Buying Cars - sell to carmax , which value -trade in, msrp, etc?

Expert: Jeremy Beck - 7/2/2009

Question
Jeremy,
I bought a 2008 camery le in Feb.2008, the place I worked at closed their doors on March 25, 2009. I can no longer afford to keep this car on unemployment pay. I am thinking about taking it to carmax and see if I can get at least payoff for it. I think payoff is around 14,500-15,000, which offer am I likely to get trade in value , msrp, private party value?
2008 camery le 26,500 Mi excellent condition
Thanks for your help,
Derek Franklin

Answer
Derek,

Thanks for your question.

Carmax is a great source for you to sell your car to.  The value that you can expect is at the very minimum trade in value.  The private party, and MSRP value are not valid when selling your car to a dealership.  I would venture to say that you will get close to your payoff, but go and see.

Thanks - JB
