Expert: Ray Paulsen - 9/21/2009

Question
QUESTION: Hi Ray,

I live in South Carolina and I placed an ad online to sell my 2008 BMW 328iC. I have a prospective buyer who lives in New Jersey, and I think she is ready to purchase.

What paperwork do I need in order to sell my car, private party-to-private party, when we meet to make the transaction?

Can you give me step-by-step instructions and where to find the documents I need?

Thanks so much.

Tom

ANSWER: Hi Tom

The simple answer is sign over the title and draw up a bill of sale .

I Tom ???--- sold my 2008 BMW - Vin # - Amount - Date - AS IS - (To) - Name -  address - phone , get copy drivers license - certified funds - notify your Insurance.

Selling a vehicle vary by location, here is a list on my website that will provide all the answers   http://www.usedcartips.org/DMV.html   link to SC, study the site and contact your local DMV to make sure you have taken the right steps selling a vehicle registered in SC.

QUESTION: Quick follow-up -

I have to turn my license plate into my local DMV when it is sold. Who is responsible for obtaining a temporary plate so that the buyer can legally drive the car home? Would the temp tag be from the seller's state or the buyer's state, and what would the appropriate person need to do to get a temp tag before the transaction has occurred?

Thanks again.

Answer
Tom, Tom, Tom, LOL

Certified money in your hands and keys turned over to buyer, you're out of the picture,,, as for the next step buyer getting vehicle to another state is not your problem, if you want to get involved tell buyer to contact the DMV for directions.

On the other hand, if that becomes an issue as for you selling your vehicle, I will be more than happy to help the buyer.
