Subject: Tires 4 wheel drive

Question
I have a Jeep Cherokee Laredo 2003 that needs new front tires. The salesman said that I need to buy 4 new tires at a time for a 4 wheel drive. Is this true? The back tires are fine.

Answer
Julie,

The overall diameter of tires is important for All Wheel Drive and 4X4's because differences in diameter will cause the drivetrain to bind up - the front is traveling a different speed than the rear.

So unless you are willing to risk a transfer case failure, replacing in tires in sets of 4 is your only option.
