The question I have is are these tires still safe with the small square pieces of rubber missing.  I have the same thing on my 2003 RAM 2500 Turbo Diesel tires.  They are B. F. Goodrich 265/R70 17, load range E. I am about to take a trip and am a bit concerned. Also, what would cause this condition.

The tires still have great tread and seem to handle just fine. They have also worn evenly with proper rotation at scheduled intervals.

Thanks,

Wheeler
