Tires/Truck tires, PSI and rubber peeling

The question I have is are these tires still safe with the small square pieces of rubber missing.  I have the same thing on my 2003 RAM 2500 Turbo Diesel tires.  They are B. F. Goodrich 265/R70 17, load range E. I am about to take a trip and am a bit concerned. Also, what would cause this condition.

The tires still have great tread and seem to handle just fine. They have also worn evenly with proper rotation at scheduled intervals.

I can answer questions about tire brand applications without Brand bias or company loyalties. Any bias that I may have is based on practical and real world experiences. I will answer questions about tire sizes, wear, speed ratings, load indexes as well as most other questions about passenger, light truck, tractor along with RV/trailer & medium truck tires. Please include the type of drivetrain for vehicles: 2WD, 4WD, AWD and if the vehicle is lifted or lowered. If you have a tractor question please indicate if it's 2WD, Front Assist or 4WD.
