Question
The engine is a 22r 4 cyl.  Recently the check engine light has started to come on and when this happens the truck runs rough as though it is starving for fuel.  It will sometimes stall and engine will turn over but will not start for a few minutes.  Once the engine is running and I rev it, it hesitates, sputters and black smoke comes from the exhaust.

Try to get the trouble code that's causing the check engine light. Locate the diagnostic check connector under the hood, open the cover and find the terminals TE1+ E1, put a jumper wire between them and turn the key on, the check engine light will flash giving you the code number, for example two flashes followed by one would be a code 21.
