Toyota Repair/struts and shocks

I took my Toyota Solara (2002, 154K miles V6) to a friend to get new tires and a wheel alignment.  This car has never needed any repair other than regular maintenance.  It has been a real winner for me and runs beautifully.  He picked up the car for me and when he returned it, he said that the car also needs struts and shocks.  My regular mechanic has never mentioned this.  I may be moving in one year and if so, will sell this car.  My question is:  how important is it to repair this and is this a safety issue or not?  Additionally, I have seen you recommend that struts and shocks be installed by a Toyota dealer.  Are you still of that opinion?
Thanks !

Worn shocks/struts are a safety concern since they can cause stability issues when worn, at this mileage it doesn't sound unreasonable+, any competent shop can replace them as long as they have the proper tools and equipment usually at considerable savings over the dealer.
