Track & Field - Female 55m/100 hurdling

Expert: Ross Dunton - 7/19/2008

Question
Heelo Roos:  I've spoken to you before via another site, I don't remember how we connected, however since we've last emailled my daughter runs the hurdles.  She had a huge PB this past outdoor high school season she went from running a 15.74 last year to a 15.09 this season, but there were some struggles along the way.  Her or like to say, our problem because I coach her is getting her to reach the hurdlers, at each hurdle she getts further and furter away which causes floating and one race she was so far way from it that she nipped it with her heel and it almost took her out, it was ugly and scary at the same time.  What is her problem?  I worked on her stride pattern, I don't know if she's not strong enough or what, it gets frustating for both of us.  There's no doubt that she can run 14's if we can fix this major issue.

Answer
Sharon,
To fix her problem have her work on running 100m then rest for two minutes and then run another 100m. Run six 100s twice a week. She also needs to work on her strength. Have her do sit ups, leg lifts, squats and while sitting on a chair lift her lower leg with some weight near her ankle. Do this three times each week.
