Question Hello Khadevis. I have watched your 800 runs and I was highly impressed and i was wondering how to train for the 800. I have the responsibility of coaching a 4x800 this upcoming track season and I need advice on how to train these athletes to keep a good pace while storing away their kick. If you could help a fellow Fort Worth citizen out i would gladly appreciate it.
Thank you,
Brandon Hodge
Answer Hello Brandon. In the fall you mus emphasize endurance and strength. Wat this means is to make sure they get enough mileage as fas ar long runs in. Yet, because you are coacing high school, you can start by giving them either repeat 400's, repeat 800's, or repeat 600's with 200 meter jog in between. Early on in the season you can have tem running a slower pace and as the season progreses, you can increase the speed. The important thing is to find out what type of runners you have. Either they will be the 400/800 meter type or the 800/1500 meter type. THen you can develop a program that works toward their strengths. Also, remember you may want to do some race pace training sessions. I sometimes do a 500, 600, or even a 700 in training at the same pace as I am going to run my race. I do not think this is necessary for high school kids, but te more you can mimic te race in training te better. I always advise coaching to really get to know your athletes. No 2 athletes are the same and this means no 1 workout will necessarily work from everyone,. WHat you as a coach has to do if find out what works best for each athlete. The 800 meter event is a speed endurance event so you are trying to build up their speed endurance. Essentually meaning you want them to be able to maintain a good rhythm. Just work on it in practice. You can do this also by giving repeat 200's. Example 3X200 wit 50 meter walk/jog in between each 200 and have them run anywhere from 32-29 depending on their talent. The exact distance and time is not important just adjust it for each athlete or for the group as a whole.
