Track & Field - discus throwing

Expert: Byron Collyer - 8/15/2009

Question
Hi Mr Collyer!

I am a 15 year old discus thrower now, 5.9ft, 80kg, and has a PB of 47m with the 1.5kg discus.(spin) For my lifting, i can do a 1 rep 105kg bench press, 100kg clean and my squats would be probably over 140kg as i haven't tried a max 1 rep yet. I rely a lot on speed and explosiveness for my throws, and would like to earnestly consult your help in expanding these attributes and ultimately adding to my distance through some exercises aside from the ones i do which are few; weights, technique, sprints/jumps. If you don't mind, could you also please give me some tips on stretches and exercises that can lengthen and increase the explosiveness my muscles can generate? Thanks alot!

Answer
Hi Sean,

First, stop doing 1 rep max lifts--you're really taking a chance at injuring yourself. I'd say stay above 4 the four rep mark. It'll help your training for sure. as far as power and explosiveness are concerned, I'd suggest getting some hands on core training. If you want to develop yourself as a serious athlete, you need to learn how to engage your core. Try a few sessions with an athletic trainer or certified personal trainer who has certifications in core training. Make sure they're certified. They should also be able to show you stretches (I can't show you exercises/stretches on the net without seeing you and assessing you first).

Hope this helps and good luck-you sound like you're right on track!

byron.
