Question While cutting hay the PTO stopped, when I stopped the tractor it died. I started back up and as soon as I push in the clutch it dies. Seams to be loading up the tractor. Any suggestions?
Answer Hello,
Not sure why the pto stopped. The pto clutch could have started slipping, or the pto could have shut off by itself which is common on these models. If this is a powershift tractor, the engine will snub while pushing in the clutch if the C1 powershift clutch stays on. The C1 pilot spool in the powershift control valve is probably sticking. The control valve is on the right side of the transmission, and the plugs on the right side of the valve top and bottom are for the 4 pilot spools. Remove each plug (takes a 7/8" wrench) and see if the spools slide freely in the bores. If one is tight, pull it out with a needle nose pliers and polish it with fine emery cloth, then clean it and reinstall it. Keep each spool and spring with the hole that it came out of, don't mix them up. If all the spools move freely and the engine still snubs, then the C1 clutch will have to be repaired by splitting the tractor and removing the powershift.
