Transgender/Transsexual - GID in 5 year old?

Expert: Ray Wigley - 11/6/2009

Question
I want an opinion on whether my son has GID. He just turned 5. Going back to 2 years old every choice he made was toward feminine, if there were 4 characters, he would pick the 2 girl ones as his favorite. books, toys, etc. His bday cake at 2 was a girl charcter, same w/ age 3, 4 and 5 have been pink and purple flower cakes. Anyway everything was mild, in other ways he seemed like a regular little boy though very artistic, which I love. But around 3 he fought w/ us for a full year that he was a girl. Finally at 4 he said he knew he wasnt but likes girl things. Fine. We do give him what he likes. He also creates his world. He slowly removed boy things from his room and would take things from mine,or his sisters, anything femine. So I began giving him the pink sheets he wanted,or the tinkerbell pillow. Then he asked for dress up clothes. I got him. He wears this stuff daily. It only comes off to go out to school or errands. And then it is a battle. He cries daily he hates being a boy, hates his boy clothes. Every school day is a battle. We try to get him boy pink shirts when I can find, or lots of red b/c he said it is close to pink. All his friends are girls. He loves to paint ,is quite talented. He turns over photos of himself b/c he doesnt like the way he looks (a boy). That makes me really sad. I keep telling him how beautiful he is and he can be a boy who likes girl things. But he says he wants to be a girl . He wants to be a mom when he grows up,etc. We dont let him wear the costumes out of house for fear of him being teased. He keeps saying he doesnt care, but I know he doesn't understand.  My question is the level of the pink interest is in my mind obsessive, like he wont look at books w/ boys in them,or only colors w/ pink and purple crayones. Even my daughter isn't like this. Is the obsessive level normal for GID or it makes he think he is OCD and has just fixated on girls/pink??  Bottom line we want him to be happy but he is so young, are trying to balance this w/ protecting him and letting him be who he is.

Answer
Hi Cheryl

Several things here
He is in a mainly feamle world, you and his sister.I take it his sister is older than him. He sees her dress in colourful attire, have nice smelling things softa nd cuddly. She is his role model and he is fixated on being good.

He may have GID but at five it is too soon to judge.
Watch his reaction when he meets male peers and see if he still wants femaile things os imore attracted to the action side

Ray
