Transportation and Vehicle Safety - Use of radar

Expert: Terry Godchaux - 10/18/2009

Question
Can an officer assigns two citations in one use of a radar ?

Answer
Hello Moses, and welcome to AllExperts!

The officer can only write one ticket per radar return tag, however, the officer can make numerous radar tags. It is like shooting a bullet at a target. Only one round may hit the target at any one time, however, he may fire the gun at as many targets as he desires.

If the officer with the radar gun has assistance from other vehicles, it's possible to make as many as 10 tags a minute, and transmitting each tag and vehicle description to the next waiting officer who will actually write the ticket to the driver who was speeding.

If the officer is working by himself, he may make 1-3 tags and attempt a stop on all vehicles at once, writing each ticket up according to the information that was obtained by the radar gun and his memory of each incident.

I hope this has helped Moses. Have a great day!

Terry
