Travel in India - Train or bus in Rajasthan?

Expert: Shivom - 9/4/2008

Question
Hi Shivom,

I will be in Rajasthan for about week, 27th sept - 5th oct. We plan to travel by train or road/bus between cities, Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer. How's the possibility to get the train seat without earlier booking? We just come to the train station and buy the ticket on our departure date, can we get any seat? How's travelling by train in India/Rajasthan? How is it to be compared with luxury bus? (The comfort, speed, price, security?) Is it safe to travel by train or luxury bus at night?

Thank you for answering.

Regards,
Nawita

Answer
Fransiska,

There are plenty of good buses & trains between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur and both the options are equally good, safe and economical. However for traveling to Jodhpur & Jaisalmer I would recommend the train as it is both safer and more reliable. Since you are going to be traveling in late Sept- early Oct, the weather would still be a bit warm and so it is better to travel by Air Conditioned train/bus.

In terms of traveling without bookings, you do run the obvious risk of not getting a seat in the train, for bus it is not a problem u will be able to get buses seats directly at the time of departure. For traveling without reservations you can also get the IndRail Pass which allows you to travel unlimited for the duration of the pass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indrail_Pass)

General tip about security, preferably avoid traveling alone at night by train or bus, its best to go in a group and if you are traveling alone then preferably try to travel during the day.

Hope you have a safe & enjoyable trip!
Shivom.
