Question
My job requires me to travel back and forth from the UK to the USA often. I stay in each country for 3 to4 months. We shipped our Dovberman to the UK last year under the PETS program and got her her Blue EU passport and always kept up to date, but now we are faced with the return shipping for just 3 months. Going as Cargo she costs $2000 to ship. I am wondering if there are ANY EU countries that will allow her to travel as baggage. I heard belgium would but that was a while back. The cost is Killing me but I will not give her up and 3 months is too long to kennel her. Desperate for altrenatives. Can someone me. I don't want to have to loose my job but I'm running out of options.
Thanks
Kate

Answer
Dear Kate
These are the REAL challenges to being a 'pet travel agent' I love it.
Where in USA will you be going to?
You can most definitely bring the dog out of UK as excess baggage.
Do NOT let anyone tell you you can not!!!!
To my area in Washington DC, you can use: British Air, Virgin Atlantic
or United direct to Dulles.  Shop around.  Continental flys from
Gatwick to Newark or Houston.  They have just the one price; not
the excess baggage versus cargo.
You could also fly: Lufthansa via Frankfurt; KLM via Amsterdam;
SAS via Copenhagen; Air France via Paris; Austrian via Vienna
ALL with the dog as excess baggage!!!
Returning to UK is a bit more complicated.
From USA, dog would have to go back as CARGO  ONLY, if direct to
UK.  From my area direct would ONLY be Brit Air or Vir Atl.  NOT
United.  CO to Gatwick from either Newark or Houston would be
less expensive by much.
You could return with dog as ex bag via one of the above routes
thru the continent.  Then, should be able to return to UK on the
UK pet passport program without problems.  You can use the tunnel
under the channel, ferry from France, Belgium or Netherlands; or
some air service.  You would have to check with the operators of
these services as to requirements and charges.
In ALL cases, dog would need the T&T 24 to 48 hrs before travel.
MOST  important to remember dog gets his annual rabies booster WELL
in advance of the annual anniversary of his shot.
It MAY be necessary for UK to NOT think dog went for visit in USA.
In this case, they may require dog to travel from continent in some
form of cargo.  The easy transit from Europe to UK MAY only be
available if dog has NOT left the EU.  DEFRA can best answer this.
There is no need for UK authorities to know he went to USA.  No
one stamps his passport as they will yours.  Just tell them, if they
ask, that he stayed in France, for instance, while you went to USA
People do this all the time.  If this were his first visit to UK
then he would need to show rabies titre test, and wait 6 mos, but
since he already has UK pet passport, there should be no problem
Do let me know if this helps, and how it all works out.
Regards, Jerry Mishler
