Subject: Bringing a puppy to Germany

Question
I live in Germany and my parents are coming to visit next year (from the U.S.) They would like to bring me a chihuahua puppy.  My Question is, is it possible to bring puppies under 12 weeks to Germany?(Puppies can't get rabies vaccines until they are at least 12 weeks)And if not, than am I right in saying puppies can't be brought over until they are at least 16 weeks old? (Rabies vaccine at 12 weeks, then the minimum 30 days)I know they also need a Microchip-is there anything else? Thanks so much for your help! Alicia

There is a lot of controversy regarding this issue.  Some EU countries
will allow young pets in without the rabies vac.  There is a
special certificate available  Suggest you have your parents
contact the usda office in their state.  Sometimes it is only
necessary for the vet to write on the health cert AND the EU form
998 that the pet is too young for rabies vac.
If you can, check this out with the local German authorities.
Perhaps the German customs people at Frankfurt.
Your parents might also contact the German consulate nearest where
they live.
When all is said and done, if your parents could just secure the
pup in advance so it can have the rabies vac and just wait the
30 days.!!!
They should be able to bring the pup in the cabin.  Otherwise, as
excess baggage, checked baggage.  Much cheaper and the pup would
clear customs with them.  Cargo will be more expensive and more
possible problems at customs.
Hope this helps.  Keep me informed...
