Subject: India to France

Question
I just read a reply from Rachel to Rose, and it astounded me.  I just had to ask the question for myself.

I am shortly (within the next 8 months) moving back to France from India.  My son keeps hounding me (sorry about that!) to take the street dog we have adopted (she has been with us for almost two years).  I just keep telling him no - because of the cost and 6 months quarantine, plus the horror stories I've heard about how they are treated on airlines.

Going by Rachel's answer, do I understand correctly that I must get a blood test done a minimum of three months prior to departure and that quarantine can be done at home? (how can that be determined/proved - our dog is always in the walled garden anyways and never goes into the street)

The dog is disease free and has had all inoculations - though she has not had a chip put in yet - as I wasn't going to bother doing that.  But now....well - if it's going to be as easy as it sounds, we might be able to take her.

Thanks in advance.

Answer

There is NO 6 mos quarantine.  There is no quarantine at all.
Forget the horror stories.  Everyone hears them, but no one can
produce any facts about it.
You need to get a mircro chip immediately.  Then, get a rabies
booster shot.  If the dog has a previous rabies shot, go ahead and
get the blood test done immediately.  It must be sent to an
approved lab.  I do NOT know the labs you have available in India.
Then, wait 3 months.  This is NOT a quarantine.
Hopefully the blood titre results will come back approved.
Check with the French embassy or consulate near you for updated
info.  Also, visit:  www.ipata.com  there are several members in
France.  They should be able to provide you with an approved lab
for your vet to send the blood to.  There are also some pet shippers
in India.  They should also know of an approved lab.
Doesn't your own veterinarian know anything about this?  Find one
that does!!!!
Ultimately, the dog would travel to UK as CARGO  ONLY, not as
excess baggage.  You need to contact the airlines such as British
Air as to the estimated charges.
