Travel with Pets - Traveling to Romania and Back with a Therapy dog

Expert: jerry mishler - 7/5/2009

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2lb5oz therapy dog I have with me at all times for medical reasons. I would like to go to Romania for 3-6 months on a mission trip helping at a home for single mothers. Of course my dog is well trained and immunized.  Neither she or I could survive a quarantine! Would either the U.S. upon returning or Romania require a quarantine?
Kind Regards

ANSWER: You should have no problems so long as you meet  EU Romanian entry
requirements:  microchip   rabies vac at least 30 days old and less
than 1 yr.   aphis 7001 international health cert issued within 10 days of travel and endorsed by usda.  Also,  EU form 998 bilingual
English-Romanian (maybe, English-German) and endorsed by usda.
This form only indicates rabies and microchip info.  No big deal, but
very important.  Both of you could indeed survive quarantine, but
there is not one.  For re-entry into USA, very easy.  New health cert
issued within 10 days of travel from europe, and valid rabies vac
You should be able to take dog into cabin with you. What airline
are you going on, and from where?  I recommend Lufthansa if you can
via Frankfurt.
Let me know how this works out

QUESTION: Hi Jerry,  Thank you so much for your very prompt reply!  Wonderful news.  So am I understanding you clearly, My little Pom would NOT have to be in quarantine to get BACK into the U.S.?  I didn't see anything on line that indicated that was the case.  Trust me, neither of us would survive, her being quarantined. She's too small and too "connected" to me.  I hadn't picked an airline, but she always flys sitting on my lap and at no charge as she is a therapy dog.

ANSWER: Please, believe me.  NO quarantine upon return to USA....
Keep me posted
Do have handy at all times that she is a registered therapy dog
Regards, Jerry

Oh yes.   VERY important.  Do NOT travel via UK as they will NOT
allow the dog in the cabin.  ONLY as cargo, but still no quarantine

QUESTION: Hi Again, Jerry how do you know so much about all of this?
If I went to Europe, can I take my dog anywhere one I'm there?  Do I have to have a new health certificate with EVERY country?? Kind Regards, Vanessa

Answer
Once in EU you procure the EU Pet Passport from any veterinarian.
This will records rabies and microchip info.  Will also record
complete vacination records.  Then you can travel all over EU with
no problem.  No you will not need to get health certs along the way
Only if you wish to visit UK, Sweden, Norway, Malta, would you need
extra requirements.
Jerry
