Question Family of 6 are trying to make it out there to Spain this winter Holiday season.
We don't know what the weather is like so we hope to stay the southern
region. We will arrive most likely Madrid or Barcelona end December and
want to stick around for 2 weeks. Any ideas. We have grandparents and
grandchildren. I did some research and Andalucia seems to be the warmest
but I also want to do some big cities.
Answer Hello Margaret
The souther region will be the warmer in winter, pleasant for sightseen, much better to visit this area in winter than in summer.
With 2 weeks you have a lot of time to visit Andalucia (south of spain) and Madrid or Barcelona. As you are travelling with children and elder people you may want to travel without rushing.
Some information:
Andalucia will be the warmer place in the Iberian peninsula, but not as warm as for sunbathing. Warmest place will be Costa Del Sol area, around Malaga, with luck you'll have sunny days and fresh nights, good for walking along a beach and feel the sun.
More to the north doesn't mean colder necessarily. Barcelona is located more to the norht than madrid, but it's at sea level.
Madrid and Granada are at about 600m over sea level and near higher mountains, that's because are colder areas, specially by night. But it snow in Madrid only one or two days every year and normally the snow melts in the following hours. Colder months are january and februay.
If your holidays are also in christmas, day 24 afternoon and day 25 are almost 'missed' days and should be kept either for travelling or strolling in a city.
For 14 days you could do the following
1 arrive to M or B
2 visit M or B
3 daytrip from M or B
4 visit M or B move to Sevilla
From Madrid to Sevilla i recommend highspeed trains, if purchased online and in advance you could get very good discounts.
From Barcelona take a flight, there are lowcost such as clickair and vueling
5 Sevilla visit the city
6 Sevilla daytrip to Cordoba
7 Sevilla visit the city or daytrip to Ronda
8 Sevilla and move to Malaga
9 Malaga visit the city
10 Malaga visit the city move to Granada
11 Granada visit Alhambra
12 Granada move to M or B
13 visit M or B, possible daytrip
14 return home.
From Granada to Madrid, trains, to Barcelona, flight, vueling low cost has also flights here.
I would choose Barcelona or Madrid but not the two, or you'll be rushing a bit
Malaga is a secondary destination, but may be a pleasant place if the weather is fine.
Barcelona and Madrid have many daytrips, in Madrid it's almost a must to visit Toledo.
This is a general idea of what you could do, it involves booking 5 hotels, that could be less if you remove Malaga. Also gives plenty of time in Sevilla and Malaga, you could remove 1 day from these cities and add it to Granada, Barcelona or Malaga.
Cordoba could deserve a couple of days, but normally a daytrip is enough and returning to sevilla in the same days saves you from another change of hotel.
I hope this helps a bit.
