Question
we will be staying 4 days in barcelona before we board on a cruise ship on May 2009. Can you give us good tips how can see most of barcelona proper in 4 days? what part of the city is the best spot to stay if we want to see most of the architectural and it's famous gaudi art of work of barcelona

Answer
Hello theresa

4 days is enough to see Barcelona properly, and even you could add a half-daytrip to Montserrat or daytrip to Tarragona or Girona.

Barcelona:
Old center or Gothic quarter
--cathedral
--stroll the narrow streets and see many important buildings from outside, cityhall,Generalitat palace
--Sta Maria del Mar
Could be of interest Picasso museum, only if you enjoy modern art
Ramblas
Barceloneta neighborhood
PArc de la Ciutadella and Arc del Triomf
Olympic village
Eixample distict, with Sagrada Familia, Mila house (la pedrera) both by Gaudi, Hospital de la Santa creu (modernist style), Illa de la discordia with several modernist houses including casa batllo (by gaudi?)

Montjuic for sights over the city and olympic installations.
Also Fundacion Joan Miro, again for modern art.

Poble Espanyol, example of traditional architecture from several plaecs of Spain.

out of the center
Parc guell, by gaudi.

any guide will give you these and more ideas and information.
Check also the Barcelona tourist website

For daytrips, you can do them if you find that you have seen everything of your interest, no need for bookings.
for a half-day trip

Best places to stay, something centrical or with a nearby metro station. I have not experience in Barcelona hotels and don't know too much about the city, but i would look around Eixample area and around Plaça Catalunya. Eixample is where most of modernist works by Gaudi and others, are located.

I hope this helps.
