I live in Madrid, and travel frequently to Valencia. I have also travelled to many places all over spain, if haven't been there i'd try to help anyway providing my knowledge and links. I enjoy trekking in the mountains, and know pyrinees, Picos de Europa and mountains in the center.

Travel to Spain - Pyrenees hiking

Expert: Víctor Díaz - 6/25/2008

Question
Dear Victor,

A friend and I will be in southern France in mid-August and would like to spend five or six days hiking in the Pyrenees. We would like to hike from hut/refugio to hut/refugio each day since we cannot bring much equipment with us. We are healthy and good hikers and can easily cover 15-20 kilometers per day. What would you recommend? Are there resources we could  consult?

We'll be flying in from the United States.

Answer
Hello John

I do recommend that you book the refuges, or you may find you have no space left in any refuge. There are some sources to look for refugees.

Central part of spanish pyrinees are in two different regions of spain. Catalunya (the province of Lerida) and Aragon (province of Huesca).

In spain you could do hikes in this central part, coming from france to somewhere in Lerida and then moving to huesca or the opposite.

Maps: I always liked the Alpina maps sold in spain, i don't know if you can find them in france, probably there are sold some other type of maps for hikers.

One popular route in the Lerida pyrinees is 'carros de foc' that you can do by yourself booking the refuges and taking a map with you it's enough.

Another route is GR11 from med sea to cantabric sea along the pyrinees.
