I live in Madrid, and travel frequently to Valencia. I have also travelled to many places all over spain, if haven't been there i'd try to help anyway providing my knowledge and links. I enjoy trekking in the mountains, and know pyrinees, Picos de Europa and mountains in the center.

Answer
Hello Erin
There are direct buses to Lagos form Sevilla, the line is owned by one partuguese and one spanish bus companies, the portuguese site Eva-Bus is more user-friendly

http://www.damas-sa.es/
http://www.eva-bus.com
Here is the timetable (notice sevilla in portuguese is Sevilha)
Sevilha     Lagos     06:30     09:45     Diariamente
Sevilha    Lagos    08:00    12:30    Diariamente
Sevilha    Lagos    13:30    16:45    Diariamente
Sevilha    Lagos    16:15    20:45    Diariamente
cost 20euros

And you have other options, which are what you have seek by the moment, getting to Faro with Alsa and from there another bus to Lagos, ask to 'travel in portugal' experts about this option, if the direct bus with Eva is not an option for you.

From Lagos to MAdrid:
You have two options
Lagos-SEvilla-Madrid

or

Lagos-Lisboa-Madrid

Both options can be done with bus+train or just with buses. I would say that lagos-sevilla-madrid bus+train is the best option. Despite train can be a bit expensive, you may get discounts by buying online and in advance. Bus option would be cheaper, but will take much more time than high speed trains from SEvilla.

Lagos-Sevilla-Madrid would be as follows:
ake the bus to Sevilla (with Eva bus), arriving to 'Plaza de Armas' bus station... (two bus stations in sevilla).
4h30 and 20euros

Move to the main Train station of Sevilla (Santa Justa train station).

you could use some local bus (i don't know wich one... http://www.tussam.es ) a short taxi ride, or even walking if it'¡s not too warm and you are not carrying too much luggage.
Look at this map
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=115225555847469044779.00...

take one AVE train to madrid, from 67euros without discounts.
takes about 2h30.

Bus sevilla-Madrid:
http://www.socibus.es/index.html
takes 6h cost 18,65 euros.
from the same bus station 'plaza de armas'.

The option lagos-sevilla-madrid i think is worst, as lisboa -madrid is also a long distance and there is only one overnight train, and with buses it finally takes as much time as doing all the way by bus through sevilla.
Bus lisboa-madrid

I hope this helps.
