I live in Madrid, and travel frequently to Valencia. I have also travelled to many places all over spain, if haven't been there i'd try to help anyway providing my knowledge and links. I enjoy trekking in the mountains, and know pyrinees, Picos de Europa and mountains in the center.

Travel to Spain - going to Tomato festival in Bunyol

Expert: Víctor Díaz - 7/12/2008

Question
Hi

A friend and i are going to the tomato festival on august 27. we have however
decided to take a few days off prior to that and will be going to spain from 22
evening backin London thursday 28. We were thinking of going on a road trip
from somewhere like (granada - open to ideas), going to valencia for the
tomato fight, then we take a flight from barcelona back to london.

Can you recommend an itinerary? We'd like to do the south coast of spain and
go to the beach on the way, so we dont want to cram it.

Thanks!
Salim

Answer
Hello Salim

If you get to Spain in Granada, you could stay there for one night (tow days) and then hire a car to get to Buñol (near Valencia, where the tomatina takes place) and after that head to Barcelona.

you have from 3 to 5 days for the route, depending if you stay in Granada or not. If you want to visit the south coast, instead of taking the direct highway to Valencia area you could move to Motril, the nearest coast town to Granada and from there head to Almeria doing all the way to Valencia by the coast.

I sincerily don't know if the beaches from Motril to Almeria and from there to Murcia are ok, probably there will be some good beaches. I know the best preserved are those in the Almeria coast.

From Alicante to Valencia there are very good beaches.

Andalucia coasts

Costa Tropical (Granada coast) and Costa de Almeria

Best place in the area are probably Almuñecar and San Jose.

From there to the north you get into Murcia region. In this part of the coast if you seek beaches but also ambient and fun then you could try La Manga or San Pedro del Pinatar.

From there you get into Valencia Region, the beaches get better in my opinion.
Places with good beaches are Alicante (San Juan beach, noth of the city) and Denia.

and Benidorm the biggest tourist destination in the area, that enusers lot of ambient but also a bit overrun by tourist.

In Valencia area: Gandia and Cullera have very good beaches and lot of ambient.

You could also move to Alicante area directly, Denia and then Valencia city, with good beaches too.

These are some general ideas that i hope they help you a bit. ASk me again whenever you want for more details (will be off line from july 24 to august 15).
