Question
Hi Victor, My friend and I are 18-19 years old and we wanted to travel in Spain and Portugal. Our flights arrive at Barcelona and can leave in Seville or Barcelona, depends of the tickets between Cadiz(or Seville) and Barcelona....We had think about staying 3 days(2nights) in Barcelona (by the way, do you know a hotel or a something for young people that is near the center of the city and that is cheap? (and good?!))  After, we were going to Madrid, (2 days) and then go to Porto, 2 days, and go down to Lisbon, 1 or 2 nights and go back in Spain, to Seville, and if we can, go to Cadiz and Gibraltar.... but the problem is that we don´t know which transport we should use....the cheapest one.... because we are students!
Planes? Train?Bus?.... which companies? We are looking on the Internet and it´s really not clear.
Also, do we have to buy every tickets before leaving?
Do you have some tricks to tell to us?
I thank you a lot to answer me as soon as possible,
Wish you a good day
Chow!

Answer
Hello Caroline

I can't recommend any hotel from my experience, i always think it's easier to seek by yourself according to your budget and use some of these travel forums and hotel reviews by other travellers.

for cheaper hotels, you'll prably seek better in 'hostals'
http://www.infohostal.com/

you may ask me if it's a good location or not or if there are bad or good reviews for some of your choices. (have not much knowledge about Barcelona).

For really backpackers consider youthhostals

Hostales in Spain are not youth hostels, but a cheap version of hotels, in some cases are as good as hotels, osme others aren't.

About best transport, buses are generally cheaper than any other typoe of transport, but you may seek on planes and trains just in case you can pick any offer. Also for trains, buying in advance and online you may  find some Web and Star offers with good discounts, making it as cheap as buses.

For some of the routes, are a long trip by bus. Another option in these cases are overnight trains, that may be more expensive than buses (and overnight buses) but are a bit more confortable and you should consider that you are saving the cost of one hotel night.

About leving spain from Barcelona or Sevilla, if you are finishing your trip in the south of Spain, then choose sevilla, why spent money and time to get back to Barcelona (more than 1000km) just to get another plane to return if you can take it directly in Sevilla?

Barcelona-Madrid:check trains (renfe) just in case, but if you don't afind an offer, these trains (high speed) aren't cheap.
http://www.renfe.es
There is an overnight train for about 40euros, not a bad option.
Check also low-cost vueling that flights between Barna and Madrid.
http://www.vueling.com
check also for cheap flights in websites like
http://www.rumbo.es
http://www.edreams.es

buses: Alsa bus company from Barcelona-Nord to Madrid-Avda America.
http://www.alsa.es
from 27 euros, there are also overnight buses.

Madrid-Porto:  (beware as porto=Oporto in spanish and may appear this way in some spanish websites)
No direct trains, there is an overnight international train Madrid-Lisboa (lusitania).
http://www.renfe.es/productos/precios_lusitania.html

direct flights: with ryanair
http://www.ryanair.com

buses:Alsa again
From Madrid-Estacion sur autobuses to Oporto.
two buses daily, including overnight bus, from 50euros.

Lisboa-Sevilla:the only cheap option is by bus with Alsa/Eva
(this portuguese site, SEvilla= Sevilha)
http://www.eva-bus.com

About buying in advance, i think is only necessary for train or plane tickets and want to pick some offers. For buses isn't normally necessary, but also depends on the dates of the travel.

Tricks: about travelling as cheap as possible, take a look at this post, where i included my tips. (as victor_d)

I hope this helps. As usual, you may ask me again for more details whenever you want.
