I live in Madrid, and travel frequently to Valencia. I have also travelled to many places all over spain, if haven't been there i'd try to help anyway providing my knowledge and links. I enjoy trekking in the mountains, and know pyrinees, Picos de Europa and mountains in the center.

Subject: Traveling from Seville to San Sebastian

Question
Hi Victor,

I am off to Spain next week and i need to get from Seville to San Sebastian. I
definitely cannot afford to fly so bus or train is my only option (i know it is
far!)

Would it be best to catch a train/bus to Salamanca and from there get a train/
bus to San Sebastian? Also, what is the best way to get to San Sebastian to
Madrid?

Cheers,
Cassie

Answer
Hello Cassie

My first thought would be moving to MAdrid and from there a train/bus to San Sebastian, but i have look also the option through Salamanca.

Sevilla-Salamanca-S Sebastian ------------------------------

These are the buses to Salamanca, from 'Plaza de Armas' bus station with Alsa http://www.alsa.es
06:00    13:15     30,50€
09:30    16:30    30,50€
11:00    18:15    30,50€
21:00    03:30    30,50€
takes 7h
There are not direct trains to Salamanca, Renfe show that you should get to Madrid first.

from Salamanca to San Sebastian By train you are late for the morning train, and there is an overnight train, coming from Portugal, that will cost 27,60.
departure 00:05    arrival 06:32
Taking the bus to Salamanca of 11am arriving at 18:15 waiting all the afternoon until 0:05 ... i think is not a good option.

from Salamanca to San Sebastian with Alsa again
12:00    20:20  30,21
14:45    21:45  30,21

you could take the 6am bus from Sevilla and get in time to Salamanca for the 14:45 bus to San Sebastian.
Total travel time 14:20, cost 60,71

Sevilla-Madrid-S Sebastian ------------------------------
By train, with AVE, the best offer is 67,10euros. Looks like is going to be expensive for you.
takes about 2h30.

Madrid-San Sebastian by train
ALVIA 00601 07.40 12.39  56.70 € Tarifa Estrella Turista 34.00 €
INTERCITY 00203  10.00    16.27 37.20 €
ALVIA 04167  16.10  21.30  48.20 €

You could trake a train with Star offer from Sevilla  at 11.45 arriving to madrid at 14.15, change station from Atocha to Chamartin (cost 1,15 with commuter trains and will take about 20 minutes)
and be in time to get the train at 16.20 that cost 48.20.
Total travel time 9h.45 cost: 106.45

i don't know if this fits with your budget, but it's better a plane+bus option i explain below.

Sevilla-Madrid by bus, from 'Plaza de Armas'
with Socibus http://www.socibus.es/index.html
cost 19.25 and takes about 6h15.

Madrid-San Sebastian by bus
cost 31.54 and takes 5h15.
could take the 8am bus arriving 14.15 to Madrid Estacion Sur bus station. Get to Avda America bus station, cost 1euro and about 30 minutes using metro, in time to get the 15.30 bus arriving to S Sebastian at 21:55
total travel time:  14h, cost, 51.79

-------------------
Definetly the sevilla-salamanca-ss takes 20 minutes more and cost 10euros more.
The cheaper option is bus+bus through madrid
The fastest option is train+train, saves 4h,cost 55euros more than the only bus option.

--------------
A third option, plane to Bilbao + bus to San Sebastian.
Low cost Vueling have  a daily flight for about 80euros, and takes 1h15 arriving at 18.05 (departure 17.45)
From Bilbao airport there are direct buses to San Sebastian
http://www.aena.es/csee/Satellite?cid=1047658432551&pagename=subHome&Language=EN...

http://www.pesa.net
origin:Loiu airport, destination: donostia/San Sebastian
you could take 18:45 bus arriving to SS at 20.00 and cost 15euros.
Total travel time:  2h15, cost about 95euros,
you should add the time to get to the airport in Sevilla, one hour or two at least before the departure time and  the real final cost of the plane ticket.

I hope this helps.
