I live in Madrid, and travel frequently to Valencia. I have also travelled to many places all over spain, if haven't been there i'd try to help anyway providing my knowledge and links. I enjoy trekking in the mountains, and know pyrinees, Picos de Europa and mountains in the center.

Subject: train to barcelona from marbella

Question
Hello Mr. Diaz,
I and my wife will be in Marbella, Malaga, Spain in July of 2009 for a week. After that week is up, we need to get to Barcelona to catch a ship for a 13 day Mediteranean cruise leaving from Barcelona. What is the best way to get there? We have 21/2 days to get there. Should we train or fly? Which is the least expensive, but fastest way? We will have our suitcases with us. Our goal is to get there in one day and sleep over for two, so we can do a little sight seeing. Then relax on the ship. Thanks for your help!!

Answer
Hello Dan

Gigen the long distance between MAlaga and Barcelona (almost 1000km) i recommend flying. There are some air companies doing Malaga-Barcelona.

Some of them are:
Spanair  http://www.spanair.es
Iberia   http://www.iberia.com
low cost Vueling  http://www.vueling.es

information about Malaga airport
http://www.aena.es/csee/Satellite?cid=1048858947193&pagename=subHome&SiteName=AG...

of course is too soon to look for tickets, but probably using the low cost will be cheaper than trains, and it's faster.
In case you don't want to take a plane, the second option is using trains

http://www.renfe.es

you could get a high speed train to Madrid and from there (and the same station) another one to Barcelona.

Overall it gets more time and probably more expensive, unless you buy well in advance and pick up some good offer. (you can't buy with more than 62 days inadvance)

the second option by train is directly to Barcelona, with a high speed train (AVE stands for spanish high speed) or an overnight train.

i hope this helps.
