I live in Madrid, and travel frequently to Valencia. I have also travelled to many places all over spain, if haven't been there i'd try to help anyway providing my knowledge and links. I enjoy trekking in the mountains, and know pyrinees, Picos de Europa and mountains in the center.

Travel to Spain - Driving outside Barcelona

Expert: Víctor Díaz - 9/13/2008

Question
QUESTION: Hi Victor!

There are 8 of us driving in and outside Barcelona. Because there are 8 of us traveling, the cost of renting the apartment in Barcelona is exorbitant. I was thinking of staying in Barcelona for 2 days, and then driving outside Catalunia or the countryside to see more of Spain. What can we do for 5 days near Barcelona?  Please advise. Thank you.

ANSWER: Hello Jona

Near Barcelona to the north you have Costa Brava with Girona and some nice towns to visit in the coast and inland.

To the south you have Stiges, Tarragona and the touristic area of Costa Dorada with Salou being the main city.

For both places you'll find lots of hotels/hostals to stay with wide range of prices, probably some more offer in Salou area.

I think Tarragona is more interesting and the Costa Brava have nicer landscapes and towns.

towns of interest
Santa Coloma de Queralt
Tortosa

Vic, etc..

I think Costa Brava option for countryside is a better option. The website this coast have lots of ideas and routes.

i hope this helps a bit.

QUESTION: Hello Senor Victor!
I suppose you didn't receive the second message I sent you.
How many hours is Barcelona to Costa Dorada? I tried to Mapquest it from Barcelona but I didn't know the Abbreviations for Catalunya and Barcelona.  Can I just stay in Barcelona and drive to the places you suggested?  Or should I stay in Costa Dorada for 2 nights and drive around from there?  Thank you so much.

Answer
Hello again Jona

This is the second message i receive.

Barcelona is not too far  from Costa Dorada /Costa Daurada (spanish/catalan)
considering Salou as the main city touristic destination in the area,

http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/viamichelin/gbr/dyn/controller/Itineraires?strStart...

it's 111km, about 1h and 11euros in tolls.

>>Can I just stay in Barcelona and drive to the places you suggested?
yes, absolutely, many people do Tarragona, Girona, places of Costa Brava, etc. as daytrips from Barcelona.
As you said Barcelona was too expensive i told you about Salou, for example, as a place with lot of hotels for different budgets.

>>should I stay in Costa Dorada for 2 nights and drive around from there?
If you find a place in Barcelona suitable to your budget, then you may do this  as daytrips.
Pros: don't need to change of hotel
Cons: tolled highways, alternative coast road is quite congested.

Also depending on the dates of your travel, Salou can be very quiet, but in your favor will find better deals with hotels. Anyway can be used as a base to explore Tarragona and that part of the coast.

For Costa Brava, with nicer landscapes and small towns, is the same, choose Barcelona and do daytrips (similar distances)
