I live in Madrid, and travel frequently to Valencia. I have also travelled to many places all over spain, if haven't been there i'd try to help anyway providing my knowledge and links. I enjoy trekking in the mountains, and know pyrinees, Picos de Europa and mountains in the center.

Question
Hi Victor,

I am planning to visit Cordoba, Spain in Mid November.I am wondering how easy it is to get from Cordoba to Lisbon Portugal and if there is anything I may need to keep in mind....
1.How long would it take?
2.which is the easiest way to do this?would it be convenient to buy a train ticket and if so about how much would that cost, one way?would it be cheaper to buy this ticket in advance..I am currently in Kenya and will be making most of my travel arrangements from here...

Answer
Hello Leah

Sorry for the delay with this answer

Not easy to get from Cordoba to Lisbon, of course no direct lines but as there is not train connection between the south of spain and Portugal, and the nearest train ti Portugal is from Madrid , and it's an overnight train, all these facts made this type of connections a bit unconfortable.

Let's see your options.

----------------------------------------------
By train thorugh Madrid------------------
1.move to Madrid by train, with AVE high speed trains that's not a problem, also by buying in advance you may get some good discounts (always look for Star and Web offers).

2.From Madrid, use Lusitania overnight train to get to Lisbon, there is one daily but as far as i know you can't buy tickets online.
train/dep/Arrival
00332    TRENHOTEL    22:45   08:00

http://www.renfe.es/viajes/precios_int.html

As you can't buy online, there aren't discounts available.

------------------------------------------------------
By bus or train+bus through Madrid--------------------
1A .-----  Move to Madrid
By train, many daily, check renfe website. Arriving station Madrid-Atocha.
takes almost 2h20, cost from 20euros web offer to 60 without discounts.

Then get to bus station 'Estacion Sur autobuses'.
http://www.estacionautobusesmadrid.com/frameset.html

I recommend by metro as follows (cost 1euro)
http://www.metromadrid.es/

From Atocha-Renfe metro station (in the same Atocha station where you arrive from Cordoba) take L1 heading to 'Pacifico', take L6 there heading to 'Mendez Alvaro' L6, the bus station is located there.

1B.---- Move to Madrid by bus.
Take the bus to Madrid at the Cordoba bus station (located side by side with train station)
This company do the route Cordoba-Madrid
http://www.socibus.es/
takes almost 5h and cost 14,85 have tried to search for november but they haven't upload yet the schedules, i have checked for septemeber.
Arriving station in Madrid is 'Estacion Sur autobuses', the same station of departure for buses to Lisboa.

2.Take a bus to Lisboa (schedules taken from a random working day)
with ALSA
http://www.alsa.es/
dep station/arr station/dep/arr
MADR-E.SUR     LISBOA S.R     09:30    17:00
MADR-E.SUR    LISBOA S.R    16:00    22:45
MADR-E.SUR    LISBOA S.R    23:00    07:00
cost 49euros, takes 8h

with AUTO-RES (avanza group)
http://www.avanzabus.com/web/
dep/arri
MADRID LISBOA    12:00 19:30
MADRID LISBOA   21:00 04:30
cost 46euros takes 8h

----------------------------------------------------------
by bus or train+bus through Sevilla-----------------------

1A by train to Sevilla, again with AVE trains, many daily cost from
10euros a web offer to 30 euros without discounts.
takes 45minutes

once in Sevilla you must get to bus station 'Plaza de Armas' either with public transport (bus) or taxi or walking.

1B by bus to Sevilla, with ALSA
this are the buses in a random working day
BEWARE: arriving station in SEvilla is 'Prado de San Sebastian'!!!
07:45    09:30
10:00    12:00
11:00    13:00
12:30    14:15
15:00    16:45
17:15    19:15
18:00    20:00
19:45    21:45
cost 10,28, takes 2h

then get to Sevilla 'plaza de armas' bus station by bus, walking, taxi...

2.take a bus at 'Plaza de Armas' to Lisboa
with ALSA
SEVILLA  LISBOA S.R     15:00    21:15
SEVILLA  LISBOA S.R    23:59    06:00
cost 45euros, takes 6h
with EUROLINES
http://www.eurolines.es
same schedules and similar prices (both companies share buses??)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
finally we have
Cordoba-Madrid-Lisboa
x=time waiting between train arrival and bus departure
with train+bus: cost from 20+46 = 86euros, takes 2h20+8+x= 10h20+x
with bus+bus: cost from  15+46= 81euros, takes 5+8+x =13h+x

Cordoba-Sevilla-Lisboa
with train+bus:cost 10+45= 55euros, takes 6h45+x
with bus+bus: cost  10+45 = 55euros takes 8h+x

which one to choose?
through sevilla is faster, but bus options in Sevilla are very limited
Also change of station looks a bit unconfortable.

Madrid have more buses to lisboa, but it's a longer route.
the key here is finding a good offer on trains to Madrid, if you find one in the day of your travel, then use this option with train+bus.
Possible change of station is not difficult.

and to make all this a bit more difficult, what about taking a plane from Madrid?
http://www.aena.es/csee/Satellite?cid=1049727006353&pagename=subHome&SiteName=MA...

Some companies flying are:
Iberia, Spanair, Tap
and low cost
EasyJet, Vueling

haven't consider Sevilla as there only flies Iberia/Tap and it's very very expensive.

If you find also any good offer from Madrid this could be another option to consider. There is metro staion in madrid airport too, so it's not complicataed to get there from bus or train station, just takes about 30 minutes and cost 2euros.

I hope you find this information helpful.
