Question hello, I found this site and was hoping maybe you can help me. My wife and I will be in Spain February 4-17, 2009. We are flying in and out of Madrid. We hope to attend some of the Carnivals you have that time of year. I see one in Torrevieja starting on the 15th of February which we would like to attend. is there any train to/from Madrid that will get us close to Torrevieja? Is it to far to drive? I can rent a car if need be. Also are there any other carnival/festivals that you would recommend during our dates in Spain?
I understand Madrid even has some celebrations in February, is that true? Any help would be greatly appreciated as we have never been to Spain before but we are very exicited to be going.
Thank you, Greg + Colleen Petersen
Answer Hello Greg
There is no train station in Torrevieja
Best way to get there from Madrid is taking a train or plane to Alicante
check Renfe for trains: www.renfe.es
From Alicante, take a bus to Torrevieja

Driving: a popular destination in the coast for many Madrid residents, most get there driving, it's far but an easy drive by highways.
I think the combination of train+bus can be a bit unconfortable, and if you rent a car it will give you more independence to move around the area.
I haven't heard ever of a Carnaval in Torrevieja of any special interest.
Carnivals where forbidden for many years in Spain during Franco dicatatorship, and if there was some tradition in many cases has been lost.
There are a few towns in spain with particular traditions, in the days of carnaval, but are not like any other carnival but local traditions.
The most famous carnaval in Spain are those in Canary islands and in Cadiz.
