Question
Is it necessary to purchase a international driving permit to drive in Spain? We are leaving next week and I was under the impression that one was not required but need to know for sure. Thanks

If your licence is from another EU country you can use it without the IDP, also not neccesary for driving licences from some non EU countries such as norway, swiss ...
If not:
In theory it's a must, in practice i can bet most of driver from outside of EU don't have it, but it doesn't mean that if you are planning to rent a car you'll be asked for it or if police stops your car they may ask for it.
The international driving permit is just a translation into several lenguages of your driving licence.
