I live in Madrid, and travel frequently to Valencia. I have also travelled to many places all over spain, if haven't been there i'd try to help anyway providing my knowledge and links. I enjoy trekking in the mountains, and know pyrinees, Picos de Europa and mountains in the center.

Travel to Spain - Spain road trip

Expert: Víctor Díaz - 10/25/2009

Question
We're planning a 2 week trip to Spain next year and would like to drive to each of our destinations. We would like to visit Madrid, Toledo, Cordoba, Sevilla, Granada, and Valencia as well as interesting places in between. How long do you suggest we stay in each place and how far is the farthest route? Do you suggest cutting out one destination in order to see the best and spend the most time in the most interesting place. Our son lived in Spain for a while and is fluent in spanish, he will be traveling with us so we feel comfortable visiting smaller towns as well. Thank you!

Answer
You can drive to all of your destinations and take adventage of yhe car and visit the countryside and towns in your way, but bear in mind that parking in big cities is complicated, at least in the old historic centers. If you choose a centrical hotel make sure it offers a garage.

I would spend the following days in each city (total 14 days)

-Madrid 5 days (2days for daytrips including Toledo)
-1 day in Cordoba  (optionally you may do as daytrip from Sevilla or in your route to Sevilla)
-3 days in Seville (including 1 daytrip to white towns route + Ronda)
-2 days in Granada, including the travel from Sevilla to Granada
-2 days in Valencia, including the trip from Granada to Valencia
-1 day. return to madrid

this is doable, if you have to skip one place, cut valencia from your list as it's a bit far from Granada, with nothing that's a must see in the middle.

You may do Cordoba as an stop in your travel to Sevilla.

in detail
-Madrid
day1: arrive to madrid, visit some parts of the city if you have time
day2: madrid and some of the main museums
day3: daytrip to Toledo
day4: madrid, fisnish the visit, include royal palace, also visit El Escorial if you have time
day5: daytrip to Segovia

you don't need to have a car at this moment of your travel. If you have already rented it, the in your visit to Toledo you may include Aranjuez with palace + gardens, and in your visit to Segovia, drive by Navacerrada pass (scenic road) and include the visit to La Granja palace near Segovia.

day 6:
From Madrid to Sevilla, no need of car here again, there is an excellent high speed train service, but if you are 3 or 4 people or more, a rented car may be even cheaper than train tickets for all.

by car, you may stop at Consuegra with typical windmills, located near A4 highway

also ubeda and Baeza, near Bailen in Andalucia region may be of some interest

or drive directly to Cordoba and spend most of the day there, park your car in an undergroud garage with all your belongins in the trunk and visit the city

also visit nearby Medina Azahara ruins near Cordoba, arrive to Sevilla in the evening, i think this is the best option

day8: visit sevilla, you may including nearby roman runs of Italica

day9:  move to granada in the morning, you may stop to visit Antequera near the highway
day10: visit Granada including Alhambra, with booked tickets

day11: move to Valencia, it's a long distance, you may stop at Elche to visit the palm groove and also at any beach, for example Denia (if the weather is fine)
http://www.turismedelx.com/en/
http://www.denia.net/

day12: visit Valencia, including CAC
http://www.cac.es/
http://www.turisvalencia.es/

day13: move to Madrid with time to visit Cuenca, an small detour in your way from Valencia to Madrid
day14: leave spain from Madrid ( i think it's better to be in the city of departure the day before)
http://www.turismocuenca.com/default.aspx

if you don't leave from madrid, then drive from valencia to the city from where you will leave spain.

Alternative:
visit Malaga instead of Valencia and spend more time in Andalucia area.

I hope this helps, ask me again whenever you want for more details.
