I live in Madrid, and travel frequently to Valencia. I have also travelled to many places all over spain, if haven't been there i'd try to help anyway providing my knowledge and links. I enjoy trekking in the mountains, and know pyrinees, Picos de Europa and mountains in the center.

Question
Hello! My husband and I are planning to spend 2 days in Madrid then rent a car to explore the area for 5 full days. Our itinerary is ambitious, so can you help us make it more realistic so we are not spending our whole vacation in a car? This is what we are thinking so far:
Day 1-Madrid
Day 2-Madrid
Day 3-Day trip Toledo
Day 3-Drive to Valencia, stay overnight
Day 4-Drive and stay in San Sebastian, stop in Zaragoza
Day 5-San Sebastian
Day 6-Bilbao
Day 7-Rioja region
Day 8-drive back to Madrid

Is this reasonable? Are we missing something wonderful in these areas that we should include? Thanks!

Julie

Answer
Hello Julie

Your itinerary is ambitious but doable and you will not skip too many things.

If i were you i would skip one place and  i would choose Valencia, it's a destiantion a bit apart from the rest, you could leave it for another travel in the future, may be along the mediterranean coast.

If you skip it you could do Toledo as daytrip or even stay overnight, then rent the car and move directly to San Sebastian, with stop in Burgos.

The rest of the trip is ok since your destinations are not too far.

If you choose to keep Valencia, you will arrive in the evening of day 3 and must leave to San Sebastian in the afternoon of the following day with very little time to explore the city, which deserves at least one full day for the historical center and the city of arts and science area.
You stop at Zaragoza will be a very brief stop to see the Pilar basilica and nothing more, may be you will reach zaragoza too late and will prefer to follow your way to San Sebastian as it'0s a long drive.

Notice you will be doing 350km Madrid-Valencia + 570km Valencia-SSebastian in two days just to spend a few hours in valencia, i think it doens't worths the effort and you should focus on travelling directly to Basque Country.

It's my opinion, but the trip is still doable if you choose to keep Valencia.

Finally, notice than San Sebastian is also named Donostia in basque and will be found with both names in many roads indications.

If you choose Toledo as daytrip from Madrid, do it with train, high speed, takes just 30minutes from Madrid-Atocha to Toledo train station. The car here is not a must, but with a car you may add some other towns in the area such as Consuegra or Aranjuez.

I hope this helps a bit.
