I live in Madrid, and travel frequently to Valencia. I have also travelled to many places all over spain, if haven't been there i'd try to help anyway providing my knowledge and links. I enjoy trekking in the mountains, and know pyrinees, Picos de Europa and mountains in the center.

Question
Hi!
I'm flying to Biarritz on 1st September but would like to travel to Bilbao, San Sebastian and La Rioja region. Can we travel by train/bus from Biarritz easily or would we have to hire a car? How do I find out about public transport?

Many thanks for your help!

Answer
Hello Deborah

If you are planning to travel only between main cities, then using public transport is possible, the problem come if you want to explore the countryside and get to some small towns where public transport is not very good. Also LaRioja is a wide area, relying there only in public transport will limit you a lot and i recommend a car at least for that part of the travel.

You have to bear in mind that renting a car in France and dropping it in Spain will be very expensive. Using a car in big cities such as Bilbao or San Sebastian is not necessary and you will have to pay for parking. You may rent a car when you leave S Sebastian or Bilbao and return it before leaving Spain, if you have to returnto Biarritz.

Public transport:
trains:
Renfe is the national train operator but there isn't an easy direct connection between S Sebastian and Bilbao, for example.

buses:
There are many operators, one of the most important is Alsa

bus stations: some. as the bilbao termibus,  have a website and may help to know which operator own a line.

i would say that is ht ebest way to move aorund with public transport in that part of spain.

i hope this helps a bit
