I live in Madrid, and travel frequently to Valencia. I have also travelled to many places all over spain, if haven't been there i'd try to help anyway providing my knowledge and links. I enjoy trekking in the mountains, and know pyrinees, Picos de Europa and mountains in the center.

Travel to Spain - Traveling from Madrid to Jerez/Cadiz

Question
Hi, I'm flying into Madrid (MAD)on a Friday. I need to get to Jerez by 1:00 pm or else to Cadiz by 3:00 pm the next day (Saturday). I was planning on staying in Madrid the first night and then trying to catch the train to Jerez Saturday morning. Is the Madrid-puerta de Atocha the correct station for my departure? And, is this close to the airport, or will I need intermediate transportation? If I take the train to Cadiz, is Cadiz termino the correct destination? I have also looked at flights, but they seem to be more expensive. Do you have  any alternate routes/modes of transportation that could be less expensive/ more convenient that would still get me to my destination on time?

Answer
Hello Cheri

Yes, Madrid-Atocha is the station for these trains heading to the south.

No, it's not close to the airport, you need to get metro or metro+local trains to get there. But it's very easy and takes about 30 to 40 minutes.  I could give you further details on how to get there from any place or address in Madrid. By metro it cost 2 euros (1euro single ticket +1 euros extra for airport station).
By taxi cost about 20 to 30 euros.

Cadiz termino is the Cadiz station and the end of the line.

You could use also buses, it's a long trip, so it takes many hours, but may be cheaper than planes and trains. All the route is by higways and buses are normally modern and confortable, but still are too many hours.
(distance is about 700km)

by train gets from 4 to 5 hours, the price may vary depending on the date but normally cost about 67euros

by bus with Alsa,
http://www.alsa.es/portal/site/Alsa
takes 12hours!! and cost 47euros
too many hours even for 700km and that's because you need to change bus in Granada or Sevilla and wait some time in these places.

by bus wit Socibus, direct buses
http://www.socibus.es/index.html
takes about 8h and cost 23,85.

Departure station in Madrid is 'Estacion sur autobuses'
http://www.estacionautobusesmadrid.com/frameset.html

If you have a very limited budget then go for the bus (with Socibus), else choose train (more confortable and faster). With trains you may arrive at 14:28 and with buses you would need to take the overnight bus to arrive in the morning.

i hope this helps.
