Traveling with Children - child going to wrestling camp in russia

Expert: MK - 4/30/2008

Question
my son is going to russia with sierra college to train at the olympics center.i will not be going with him..i am his mother however there is no legal documentation of guardianship on file..his father has never been involved to any degree, furthermore i have no idea where is father is at this point. my son is 14..how do i go about getting my son everything he needs to travel to Russia..

Answer
This is certainly more of a legal question.  Please direct it to the state department and the Russian embassy closest to you.  Laws are changing so please talk with them directly.   Remember to include your child in determining this so that they are informed and familiar with addressing questions in the event that he needs assistance once he is there.  A great experience- even the planning.

I would get him a phone card that he can use in the case of emergency, there are several to recommend.  Just make sure that it works in Russia.  i have a few to recommend if you like.

Get him some "learn in your car" brand of language tapes, cheapest on ebay, so that he can get familiar with the language.

Enjoy,
