Question
I bought a house about three years ago. It had this HUGE weird tree in the backyard - we didn't know that it was a weeping mulberry until about a week ago. It is about 18 feet high and 18 feet wide. When we bought it it was pruned like a bowl cut with a longer veil around the edges. One side is growing way horizontal and I dont want it to grow itself into knots and be shorter - does that make sense? How and when should I prune this beautiful tree? Thank you very much for taking my question.
Answer
Really the only part that may need pruning will be the limbs that reach the ground. How short to prune them is up to you most people prune them up about three feet from the ground. Do this in the winter or just before the leaves bud out. Do not prune any of the upper limbs this will do away with the umbrella look that the tree has. It looks like a very healthy tree I would just give it a light "hair cut".
