Trees - red oak tree
Expert: Jim Hyland - 8/11/2008
Question I live in S. MS. I had my yard landscaped in May by a certified landscaper. He put large flower beds around my 2 80 plus year old oak trees. He covered all the roots with potting soil, felt, and mulch. In the past 2 weeks all the leaves have turned brown. 1 tree has a third green leaves left. Can I save the tree with the green leaves by taking away the soil? What caused them to die?
Answer The roots of a tree are with in the first 12- 24 inches of the soil and any digging in these area can damage the roots. Adding more than 3 inches of soil and mulch can cause the soil to compress and damage the roots. The "felt" will stop or at least impede the water from getting to the roots. And also increase the temperature of the soil. I would expect the felt is the main problem. I would remove the soil and the felt and water the tree with 1 inch of water every third day- place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. This is called deep watering.
