Question I live in southern Ohio. I found a few maple tree seeds over the summer and planted them in pots. To my surprise these seeds grew.
What should I do with these seedlings that are about 4 inches tall over the winter? Can these be brought into the house over the winter?
Answer I would not bring them in the house. The heavy and low humidity would cause them problems--they will dry out. They will need to be protected from the soil in the pot freezing. If you have a garage this would be a good place to keep them until the spring. Most garages do not get freezing temperatures and they will be ok there. From time to time I would add a little water to the soil to keep the soil from drying out. Do not over water. Next spring you can transplant the seedling to individual pots until they get about 12-18 inches tall. In the Fall next year after they loose their leaves they can be transplanted to where you want them to grow. When you plant them out dig the hole twice the size of the pot and as deep making sure the soil level of the pot is the same as the ground level and fill with good top soil or potting soil. Mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk.
