Question how old is the oldest s.magnolia in the southern states and how big is it? How can I find out how old my magnolia tree is (it has a 15 ft. circumferance) and are the red seeds edible? Can you plant them to grow new trees? THANKS for any answers!
Answer I do not think there is a list of the oldest trees in the South. Each state does have however a list of "Champion Trees" which are the largest in that state. You can contact the State Forestry Agency in your area for this information. The oldest magnolia I know of is in Virginia at the summer home of Washington near Williamsburg.(planted by Washington)
The seeds are eaten by birds and some animals but I do not think they are classified as edible for humans. You can plant the seeds but it does take some special care. The following is a web site with the instructions for planting the seed: http://www.penpages.psu.edu/penpages_reference/29401/29401212.HTML
To age your tree will take an instrument called an increment borer. Most foresters can do this for you BUT I am not sure many would have a borer long enough to reach the center of the tree. Again call the local State Forestry agency and ask one of their foresters for assistance.
