Triumph Repair - Fixing minor transmission oil leaks in Tr7

Expert: Howard M. Fitzcharles III - 7/27/2008

Question
Howard,

A friend has a 1980 TR7 in almost perfect condition, very low miles - even original tires !  He mentioned he's noticed a minor transmission oil leak.  Would you recommend adding anything to the oil to stop the leak ?  I was thinking of the products you add to a radiator to stop leaks - I've heard there are similar ones for engines and transmissions.

   Thanks,

   Steve.

Answer
Hi Steve,
I think it depends on where the leak is. If it is a seal on the front or rear shaft then I think that a "fix it in a bottle" might work. But if it is a gasket leak I would not try it. Instead I would just try to tighten the bolts where the leak is. Many times drain plugs leak and they can me easily fixed.
I do have some experience with Lucas stop leak for seals. That is not the British electrics Lucas. It works well on seals.
Howard
