Triumph Repair - rear brakes

Expert: Howard M. Fitzcharles III - 8/20/2008

Question
I just replaced the brake shoes on my '78 spitfire.  I purchased them along with the adjuster wrench from victoriabritish.com.  I also had to replace one of the wheel cylinders.  My problem is that the drum will not fit back over the new shoes.  The e-brake is not applying any pressure the adjusters are all the way out.  Can the new shoes be slightly larger than original equipment?  Any suggestions?  The man at my parts store is practically refusing to turn the drums anymore than is strictly necessary to clean up the surfaces.

Answer
Hi John,
If you are sure the piston in the cylinder is all the way in and the adjusters are all the way retracted and the shoes are too large then you may have the wrong shoes. If you still have the old shoes stand than up next to each other to see of the shoes are the same. Some shoes you buy are rebuilt so they could have used the wrong shoe to rebuild.
Howard
