Hi Howard-

I have a '73 spitfire that makes a 'clicking' noise which is coming from the rear of the car. It is most noticeable when the car is coasting, and is directly related to the speed of the car. I could not hear the noise when I put the rear end up on jackstands and ran the car slowly. Does this sound like a U-joint? Wheel bearing? rear brake problem? Any ideas about where to go from here?

Hi Charlie,
Unfortunately a clicking noise can come from any one of the items you mentioned, even a wheel. The first step I would take is to try to isolate the noise to one side. Then switch wheels with the front to eliminate a wheel. Then remove the brake drums and closely examine the inside of the drum and see if anything is contacting a drum. Also check for any free play in the axle bearings and look for signs of rust or any loose play in either side "U" joint or the flange bolts loose. If it is wheel speed take the car in a large parking lot and drive in circles to try to identify right or left side by the difference in speed since in a circle the inside wheel runs much slower than the outside wheel.
